Girl’s get Silver in the League Finals
Girl’s arrived at Ferris Park on Friday with 6 matches to play against section winners and runners up in the Mid Ulster League. This was to be the last tournament of the season for the A team. Girls chalked up a string of excellent results against some very strong opposition. Victories against Armstrong 1-0, Dromore Central 2-0, Edenderry Portadown 4-0 and 0-0 draws with Waringstown and Seagoe. After 5 matches, Maralin were as yet unbeaten in the day and had only Abercorn to play. Both teams had remained unbeaten but Maralin had the greater goal difference, so heading in to the final match of the day, the girls just needed to draw to be crowned League champions. Unfortunately the match started with Abercorn scoring a breakaway goal from the whistle and from that moment on, Maralin were fighting to equalise. The girls fought courageously but were unable to get the ball between the posts and the match ended 1-0 to Abercorn.
Countless onlookers commented throughout the day on Maralin’s breathtaking skills, commitment and teamwork. The girl’s showed tremendous character and determination. They thoroughly deserved the position of runners up. It was hard for every one of us not to be disappointed with missing out on winning the league but it was a day to remember where individuals displayed the peak of their skills and the girls played as a complete team unit. I will be watching with interest to see where some of these girls end up playing in their future hockey careers, as there is most definitely potential to play representative hockey within this squad. Thank you again to both Paul Rainey and Sandra Kilpatrick, who give up their time and coaching skills to make these girls better players and thanks also to the very supportive parents who have cheered us on in rain, hail and sun shine. The B tournament takes place on Monday at Brownlow and there he search starts for next year’s new recruits.
