Girls hockey make it to the final of the Mid Ulster Championships
The girls hockey team travelled to Edenvilla in Portadown today to take part in the Mid Ulster Championships. This was the girls first competition as a team this season. They had 3 other teams in their section and throughout the afternoon, the girls met each of these teams for a match.
There were no easy matches for the girls in their section and they fought hard in every game. They completed their section having beaten Bridge Integrated 2-0, drawn 0-0 with Abercorn and narrowly beating Edenderry Portadown 1-0 seconds from the final whistle.
Maralin and Abercorn ended the section with identical points, goal difference and goals so both teams had to take part in a penalty stroke competition. This was very a nervous time for the girls but they came out victorious and moved on to the semi finals with a clean sheet for our keeper. Maralin met Edenderry Banbridge in the semi finals and won this match 1-0. The girls moved in to the final against Dromore, which was a repeat lineup from last years final. Last year, Maralin won the final and the championship but this year Dromore had the edge and put 3 goals past Maralin. The girls had to settle for the silver medals this year but in fact had no grounds for disappointment as they made an excellent start to the season today with some very impressive individual performances and great teamwork.
Thanks must also go to the supporters who were a constant encouragement to the girls.
