Hockey girls just fail to qualify for Northern Ireland Finals
The hockey girls were just pipped to the post in the Northern Ireland Qualifiers today at Lurgan Junior High. Their first match was against Waringstown Primary. The A team have played them twice before and come away with a draw in the league and a win in the mid ulster tournament. Sadly the girls had all the possession in the first 10 minutes and put great pressure on the Waringstown defence but could not manage to put the ball in the back of the net to take the points. In the last 2 minutes, Waringstown took their opportunities and slotted in 2 goals to win the game. The girls fought back in their next two games drawing 0-0 with Seagoe and beating Edenderry 3-0 but had not done enough to get though to the play offs for the N.I. Finals. They were understandably disappointed after clinching the Mid Ulster championships two weeks ago but the girls can hold their head high after their team performance today. It is a team with a mixture of P. 5, 6 and 7 girls and so it gives great hope for next season. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with these girls week after week and been delighted to see their game improve so much throughout the season. We have been incredibly lucky to have the expertise of Sandra Kilpatrick and Paul Rainey who have helped to coach the girls with such great enthusiasm and given up so much of their free time. We are most fortunate to have so many parents willing to give up their time to develop players and transport children to matches. It is hard to name everyone but special thanks has also to go to Ruth Hickland, Nikki Clarke and Carol McIlroy who turn up week after week to coach, encourage, help to kit up keepers, drive and take drills and warm up activities. Thank you also for all the support from our parents who come to cheer the girls on. Thursday sees the B tournament at Brownlow where Maralin have entered 4 teams. This hopes to be a fun afternoon where all the girls who have worked so hard all year , get a chance to show their skills and have an opportunity to impress for future selections. Watch out for some photos at the end of the week of the B tournament.
