The Revised Curriculum
Your child has now entered the Foundation Stage of the Revised Curriculum. The Foundation year reflects the existing good practice already firmly established in Northern Ireland schools. A big emphasis is placed on independence and situations are set up for the children to think for themselves, be creative and not afraid to try things out. If you are a parent of an older child in the school who has already been through P1, you will notice that the classroom is set up a little differently and that materials and resources are within easy reach of your child so that they can be responsible for choosing, organising, collecting and tidying up materials that they require. Children will be ready to read at different stages in the year and some children may progress more quickly than others to a formal reading book. I have listed some ways that you can help your child below.
Outline of Areas of Study in P.1.
*This is only a very basic outline of the year’s work in P1 in order to give you an idea of what to expect*
Structured Play- social skills, topic work, “hands-on skills”, co-ordination, role-play, art& design, computer skills, language development etc.
Language Development- discussion, storytime, play, sequencing, Drama, circle time, PE, reading etc.
Listening Skills- auditory discrimination and memory
Pre-reading Skills- matching, discrimination of drawing/ print, book sharing, left to right, following/ retelling a story, nursery rhymes, recognising familiar print and signs.
Phonics- letter sound, shapes and names, listening to words and breaking them up into sounds, linking letters to sounds.
Pre-writing Skills- tracing, whiteboards, painting, colouring, dot-to-dot, left to right activities, “fun” writing etc.
Writing- news books, letters, topic work, writing their own stories independently etc.
Number recognition 0-10
Counting objects to 10 and above
Early stages of “Hands-on” addition and subtraction within 10.
Numeracy topics- shape, money, handling data, measurement etc.
World Around us
How things happen, exploring, examining, differences, changes, the environment.
Topics- e.g. babies, life before we were born, people who help us, our homes, visits from people who work in our environment, farm, growing, changing, the environment and looking after it, animals/ plants, seasonal changes.
Personal Development& Mutual Understanding
Attitudes, feelings, emotions, healthy lifestyles, relationships, rules and fairness etc.
Health and Safety e.g. road safety, safety in the home, stranger danger etc.
Creation, Joseph, Christmas story, Easter story, other bible stories and songs.
Music- songs, percussion, rhythm and beat, making musical instruments, moving to music etc.
Physical Development and Movement- Dance and movement, early games skills, gymnastics and apparatus etc.
Basic mouse control, opening and closing programmes, navigating around programmes, early word processing, artwork and supporting the curriculum.
*In the Foundation Stage we teach a lot through topics work e.g. building sites, houses, babies, seasons, animals, farm etc.*
Main Stages of Reading
- Becoming familiar with Nursery Rhymes
- Becoming familiar with books- library books, shared reading, local library etc
- Talking about picture books- what is happening, what might happen next etc
- Recognising their own name- desk, drawers, job/signing in board, labelling
- Recognising familiar text- signs around the classroom, shop signs, other names etc.
- Joining in with “reading a book”- familiar phrase, name of person, high frequency words etc.
- Reading Scheme- your child will begin with talking about picture books and will progress to reading simple text throughout the book with their parent/ teacher. Children will recognise the words from book to book.
- Using word recognition and phonic skills to recognise familiar and unfamiliar words in books, signs etc
What you can do to help with Reading
- Read to your child- library books, their own books, bedtime stories etc.
- Move your hand across the print if your child is beside you.
- Encourage your child to look around them and draw attention to names, signs, text in their surroundings.
- Make a fuss of books that come into the house and read them together.
- Make sure that reading and sharing books is always a fun and relaxed experience.
- Some children will be ready to recognise words and others will use the process of sharing a picture book as a valuable experience of book/ handling/ sharing/ familiarizing with print- the important thing is that your child enjoys reading and sees it as an experience to share their book with you.
- As time goes on, don’t just tell your child the words they are having difficulty with- let them use their phonic skills (what does it begin with?) and also let them look for clues- (what makes sense? Will the picture help?)
* When their book arrives home, please make some sort of a loose rigid cover to protect it.*
The children’s regular homework in P1 will be mostly in the form of a workbook which will contain a variety of activities. These will be connected to the topics that they are covering at school and to begin with will take the form of supporting the development of pre-reading or early-writing skills. Parents are asked to sign their child’s homework or write any relevant observations. If you feel homework takes a particularly long time please note this on the relevant page along with the time taken. Sometimes your child will be asked to carry out a practical homework and perhaps they will be encouraged to find out a piece of information or bring something into school.
P.E. will take place on Wednesday and Friday.
Children will require black slip on plimsolls and dark shorts in a named bag which should be kept in school. You may bring it home to wash at any time. If girls wear tights or a summer dress as part of their uniform at any stage throughout the year, they will require a pair of socks or a white t-shirt in their PE bag to change into. Any jewellery should be removed and long hair should be tied up.
*All of your child’s clothes (both P.E. and school uniform) should be clearly labelled*
Your child will have the opportunity to choose a library book from the class library. It can be changed every day. We will be trying to get into the routine of putting their book into the library box in the morning. The marker should remain in the library book. You may wish to initial the marker of make a comment on whether your child enjoyed the book, it is lovely to get some feedback.
It is not really a good idea for your child to bring toys into school. They can get broken or lost and this can lead to problems. Please therefore ensure that all toys remain at home.
Dinner and Snack
Dinners cost £2.10 per day. Where possible, money should be given in an envelope on a Monday morning with a note listing the days on which you would like your child to take dinner. A book of special envelopes is available at the office for £2 but any envelope would be ideal. It is possible to decide to have dinner and send in £2.10 on that morning if unplanned, but it is much easier if the class teacher has all money handled and counted on Monday so please only do this if necessary.
There is a designated bench for packed lunches in the classroom. Please do not put lunch boxes or drinks in your child’s schoolbag as they may spill out.
Your child will be provided with a healthy snack at break time. Parents are asked to contribute £20 per term towards the food provided which should be given to the class teacher at the beginning of each term. A receipt will be given on receiving your child’s snack money. Please try to ensure this is paid promptly as it becomes embarrassing for the class teacher to have to remind people. Your child will be encouraged to pour their own drinks, serve their own food and tidy up after themselves. This is a valuable experience for your child and helps in the development of their social skills and independence. If there is any money left over it will be used to supplement materials in the classroom for your child to play with and make use of.
*In all cases where money is being given in, it is asked that you try to always put the exact money into an envelope/ purse with a note to help both classroom assistants and teachers. Especially in the early days, our time should be spent putting your child at ease and welcoming them into the classroom. Money in a labelled envelope sitting on the teachers desk can be dealt with once the children are settled.*
If your child is absent from school, the school will require an absence note from you. This is necessary for the EWO visits. The school will not prepare work for your child if they are being taken out of school for a holiday. If your child has to miss school or needs to be taken out of school for a medical appointment, you will also require a written note. These are available from the class teacher.
Arriving and Leaving School
Children should not arrive at school until after 8:45am and should be in the classroom for the 9:00am bell. At hometime, 2:00pm, your child will be brought out to you at the green gate in the front playground as a whole class. Parents are asked to wait for their child and come forward to the gate to collect them. The children will be instructed to only leave the class teacher if they see the person who is picking them up. If there is a change in the person collecting your child, it is asked that you tell me in the morning. Never take someone elses child if their parent isn’t there. Please supervise your child as you return to your car.
Spencer and Bearemy Bear
Both P1 classes have a class teddy (Mrs Jackson~ Spencer, Mrs Guy~Bearemy). This bear is treated very much like part of the class. They come with us to all our events and a diary is kept of their activities. He will be sent home every weekend with one of the children and you will be asked to write a page in his diary about what he got up to with your family. There is also a place to put in a photograph or draw a picture. If you have something out of the ordinary planned or are doing something that you feel would be exciting for Spencer or Bearemy, feel free to request that date for your child to have him and where possible this will be arranged.
Your Child’s Work
Your child’s work will be kept in school. After their worksheets/ activity/ task has been marked, the children will be responsible for filing them away in their own drawer. From time to time your child’s work may be sent home in a folder for you to look at. Please sign it and then put it back in their bag so that it can be kept with the rest of their work until the end of the year. Children’s workbooks/ work on display can be viewed at parent interviews/ open days. If, at any time, you are worried about anything concerning your child, please make an appointment with me to come and talk about it. It is always nice to get a bit of feedback from parents, so please feel free to write a comment on the booklets, folders or homeworks.
Recent research has shown that children perform better at school when they are well hydrated. With this in mind, our school is trying to encourage children to drink water throughout the school day. You are asked to provide a pop-top bottle of WATER for your child to leave in the water tray beside the sink, so that they can drink from it throughout the day. Please put their name clearly on the bottle. We have water stations throughout the school where your child can refill their bottle with fresh filtered water.
As often as possible, we use the outdoor facilities at our school. We have a large selection of outdoor activities and equipment for the children to use. It is asked if your child could bring a pair of wellington boots to keep in school please.
Often we have parents in our class who do not realise that their jobs/ interests/ connections/ cultures could be very beneficial to children. In the past, we have had some parents who have been willing to come into talk to the class, perhaps about their job (we have had nurses, firefighters, dentists, builders, doctors etc and are always keen for these and other new areas) or to share an interest with the children (musical instruments, collections etc). Some parents/ grandparents have possible some materials available to them which the children could use to play with and would be interested in looking at. We look at a wide variety of topics throughout the school year and role play areas are set up. Some of these topics include- gardening, building sites, babies/ baby clinic, parties, Christmas, Post Office, coffee shop, animals, living things, life around us. Also any materials which would supplement our craft activities and are readily available to you would be very much appreciated. Please do not hesitate to talk to Mrs. Jackson, Mrs Guy or Miss Verner about any way you feel you could add to the children’s educational experience throughout the year.
